Gestures in Classical Antiquity

I started reading the introduction to The Yellow-Lighted Bookshop by Lewis Buzbee, which is kind of a reflection on the wonderfulness of bookshops, and he mentioned something about a treatise on Neapolitan hand gestures. Then I saw a Travel Channel show with Samantha Brown (love her!) in which she visits Naples. The streets are beautiful, crowded, such a market atmosphere. I assumed that if Lewis Buzbee were going to mention such a treatise, one must actually exist so I cast about and found the title above. Here's some more info on the author. I've never learned American Sign Language, but I think it looks rather beautiful in addition to it's practical purposes. Mudras, hand gestures, all things I love. I love thinking about the evolution of such things and how universal some of these things can be.

There are a couple videos on YouTube that show some basic Italian gestures:

Italian Without Words
Nada's Italian Hand Gestures Part I
Nada's Italian Hand Gestures Part II

Enjoy!

Confession.

I have a really hard time interacting with things that seem to take themselves too seriously, including but not limited to humans & musical genres. It would seem I've overdosed on lulz for I cannot take people as seriously as they take themselves. Nor myself. But then again, I can be very solemn and sober and reverent when I need that attitude inside myself. It just doesn't seem to work when I interact with the outside world. It seems so silly & pompous!

Everything dies, everything blossoms again.

"To those who think as we do, all things themselves are dancing: they come and offer their hands and laugh and flee...and come back. Everything goes, everything comes back; eternally rolls the wheel of being. Everything dies, everything blossoms again; eternally runs the year of being. Everything breaks, everything is joined anew; eternally the same house of being is built. Everything parts, everything greets every other thing again; eternally the ring of being remains faithful to itself. In every Now, being begins; round every Here rolls the sphere There. The center is everywhere. Bent is the path of eternity." -Fredrich Nietzsche, from Thus Spoke Zarathustra

Kythe.

If you could suddenly have access to all of another person's thoughts, fears, joys, memories; stand inside what it is to be that person and know their greatest triumphs and sorrows; well, I think that would be pretty completely transformational, and probably more psychedelic (mind-manifesting) than most other trips. To compare your hang-ups, your sense of the sacred, internal nuances you never notice or know how to talk about; this would have to erase your solipsism and your sense of disconnect with other humans. In some sense, I want to stand in this vesica piscis with another human and have that kind of fellowship. But in another way, I don't want my illusion of remoteness shattered because I don't know I'd feel as special and unique afterwards. It's such a double-edged blade, that, intimacy. It would be so ego-shattering. It's usually framed as a desire to know all of someone's secrets, but I think of it much more as an exercise in compassion and wisdom to know what we have in common and actually, our differences in processing too. It would be really wild to find out the different things people do in the internal chambers of their minds where no one else can ever look.

<lj-embed id="41" />
Are you ready for this? Is this the height of vanity or what?
I'm not even talking in my video debut. My excuse is that I had to
figure out the whole video uploading process. And...err...I thought my
legions of fans might be interested in my facial expressions.
Next time I will try crying while eating.
